Why Royal?
November 1963, when Ängby had been up and running for 7 years since 1956, the Chairman of Ängby, undersigned, visited King Hussein of Jordan at the Royal Bosman in Amman and at an audience the King accepted the title “President of honour” for life and all time.
This occurrence has done a lot for our club, which now is pretty well-known around the world in both sports and politics, the latter also coming from our member of honour, famous Tim Boggan of USA, who was the person to, in person, to break the “cold war” between China and USA, when he 1971 after the World´s in Japan, asked by President Nixon, led the US TT-team to China for a friendship TT-tour (where USA was badly beaten all through). Before this China did not speak with US for more than a decade. This is/was the famous PINGPONG DIPLOMACY, extremely well-known all since.
Ängby have won the Swedish TableTennis championships for teams twice, where the most famous players are named: Jan-Ove Waldner, Mikael Appelgren, YOO Nam-Kyo and KIM Taek-Soo. Part of the story is hat “Ängby has won” TWO Olympic Gold Medals through our players. Yoo Nam-Kyo won in Seoul and Jan-Ove Waldner won in Barcelona. Together with Appelgren, when his grass was green, these boys have won so many world- and European (and also Asian) titels that it is hard to remember them all.
But, the really big thing is the junior activity, where Ängby has been in “Eurotop” (specially if you mention our number of players). Especially in the international field. When Ängby this September plays in the India world junior circuit in Pune (south of Mumbay) Ängby then has played tournaments in 43 countries in total. Ängby has heavily been backing the now popular WORLD JUNIOR CIRCUIT as being one of the best initiatives from ITTF to promote the sport.
WELCOME to the VENICE of the north, STOCKHOLM.
